It’s just over 3 weeks until Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2019, remember to keep a look out for amazing events taking place near you including Scotland’s Biggest Parents Evening hosted by DYW D&A in Arbroath.

We’ve already looked at Foundation Apprenticeship’s, now let’s look at Modern Apprenticeships.

Modern Apprenticeships (MA) are designed for people, usually aged between 16-24 years old, to learn in the working environment while earning a wage. For businesses, they help train new staff or re-train or upskill existing employees. MAs are industry recognised and are a great way to work towards achieving an accredited qualification from the first day.

Each year across all industry sectors there are over 27,000 MA start-ups, this is by far the largest number of apprenticeship start–ups and the most popular out of the apprenticeship family. MAs benefit the workplace as the young people are trained in line with industry-specific tasks; many companies also offer their own apprenticeship careers

“92% of MAs stay in work once they’re qualified” SDS

There are currently over 80 various MA frameworks available, for example, Dundee and Angus College offer MAs in:

  • Business and Administration
  • Engineering
  • Hairdressing
  • Horticulture
  • Creative & Digital Media
  • Life Sciences
  • Management
  • Hospitality
  • Professional Cookery
  • Social Services (Children & Young People)
  • Social Services and Healthcare
  • Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
  • Digital Marketing
  • IT: Software Development
  • IT: Hardware Support

DYW D&A fully support MAs not only when we are talking to companies but currently within our team, we have two members who are working towards an MA qualification. Our Modern Apprentice Lottie is studying towards a Business and Administration SVQ Level 3 and our administrator, Melissa is gaining her qualification in Digital Marketing SCQF Level 6. For more information on these levels check out the SCQF framework.

If you would like more information on MAs, check out any of the links above or apprenticeship.scot or email business@dundeeandangus.ac.ukMy World of Work is another website to help with finding the right type of apprenticeship for you.

The Apprenticeship Family

Foundation Apprenticeships are a great starting point and can lead to an MA. After completing an MA, the next stage in the apprenticeship family is a Graduate Apprenticeship.
