DYW Tay Cities at Edinburgh Castle

No two days are ever the same at DYW Tay Cities. On Tuesday, our regional lead Lesley English and school coordinator Elaine Blair, along with other DYW colleagues from across Scotland, were guests of the British Army at Edinburgh Castle for the 21-gun salute marking the anniversary of the King’s coronation.

They were hosted by Lieutenant Colonel HIM Clark MBE and his team, who welcomed them to the Officers’ Mess before the salute. There, they had the chance to hear about the range of activities the Army has planned to engage with young people – one of the key highlights being the Army Expo, taking place at Redford Barracks in Edinburgh from 18–23 August 2025.

They were also introduced to Major General Bob Bruce, Governor of Edinburgh Castle, who gave a warm welcome and an overview of his role and the day’s schedule. The group was then seated to observe the 21-gun salute—a spectacular event—before returning to the Mess for lunch.

During the meal, they had the opportunity to speak with several members of the Army, from a range of ranks, who generously shared their career stories. Lesley found it truly inspiring to hear about the diverse opportunities available within the Army. The day ended with a tour of the castle, and to top it off, the weather was absolutely perfect.

“It was fantastic to be among other DYW colleagues and to see the partnership work between DYW and the Army in Scotland being recognised.” Lesley English, DYW Tay Cities Regional Lead
