This week saw DYW and Dundee and Angus College joint host an afternoon tea at the Training Restaurant within D&A College, the idea behind this was to create a passion and enthusiasm for hospitality within schools, to inform people of the career opportunities available within the Hospitality industry and to look at how to create a parity of esteem between careers within hospitality and other industries.  DYW and the college wanted to look at the variety of educational routes into hospitality and to look at the types of pupils that would be suited to a career in the sector, discussions were encouraged about what everyone from industry to the college and schools can do to “future proof” the industry and try to fill the gaps that there are in mid to high level jobs at the moment.

At the event there were a host of speakers including Simon Hewitt, Louisa Kingham, Kishelle Williams-Robinson and Albert Close from D&A College, Becky Reisenbuchler form Hampton by Hilton shared her experiences from her career and her passion and also Shannon Robertson, an SVQ level 3 patisserie and confectionery student, spoke about her journey, the skills she is learning and how school and college have helped her gain in confidence and she is now working part time for Goodfellow and Steven the bakers. The various qualities required for a career in hospitality were discussed ranging from being organised and thorough to flexible and enthusiastic as well as all the other qualities and skills in-between.

Hospitality is an exciting industry with opportunities to work all over the world and a chance of rapid progression.  Hospitality opportunities are endless worldwide and locally the Dundee Waterfront project will boost the number of visitors to the city and create thousands of jobs.
