This year’s Scotland’s Biggest Parents’ Evening (SBPE) took place on 30th January. This is a national campaign designed to increase parental engagement around Developing the Young Workforce (DYW). This year’s focus was on #JobsoftheFuture and apprenticeships.

The DYW team held a SBPE Pop Up event at ASDA Milton in Dundee from 4pm – 6pm, aimed specifically at busy parents and carers. We spoke to over 100 parents, carers and young people and hope that they feel better prepared to support their child with key education and career decisions, whether this be further or higher education, jobs or apprenticeships.

We handed out leaflets and spoke to parents about the forecast employment requirement by key sector and what jobs and skills will be more in demand in Tayside by 2025.

Did you know that the top 3 sectors that will be looking for more staff between 2019 and 2029 in Tayside are Tourism, Health and Social Care and Food and Drink?

Although we can anticipate key trends and how they’ll affect the way we work and identify specific jobs which will be in demand it’s important to remember ta across all industries, employers will be looking for individuals who have focused on developing and utilizing the uniquely human ‘meta-skills’.

These skills and capabilities aren’t new, but in this environment of ongoing change, they’ll allow individuals to excel; to collaborate and empathise with others and to create our own futures. These skills include problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, creativity and leadership. They are the skills we will all need to drive innovation, create adaptive resilience, encourage entrepreneurial behaviour and ensure our future success, regardless of context.

Technology will shape the future; but human beings will still be at the heart of innovation and problem solving. And the meta-skills that are so vital now and in the future are best developed through experience, especially in the workplace. This film addresses the future of technology, work and skills – focuses on how we best develop meta-skills that we have previously defined… Starting with ourselves, our relationships with others at work and supportive working environments.
