The Apprentice Ambassador Programme is now well under way after a successful first visit to Webster’s High School in Kirriemuir last week.
Apprentices representing various organisations including; D&A College, Michelin, Interplex, Angus Council, Dundee City Council and Robertson Construction visited Webster’s High School over two days and spoke to 7 classes of 3rd year pupils.
Fresh from their storytelling and presentation skills training session the previous week, the Apprentice Ambassadors delivered presentations and spoke to pupils in small groups about their own personal experience of undertaking an apprenticeship.
The pupils were extremely engaged in the sessions and were asking a lot of really insightful questions, with feedback suggesting that they are now more aware of what an apprenticeship is, what is involved, how you go about finding and applying for one. Feedback also showed that many pupils who had not have previously considered doing an apprenticeship would now look at it as a viable option for them when they leave school.
Raising awareness to young people about the benefits of apprenticeships is the main aim of the Apprentice Ambassador Programme and this was definitely achieved by the Ambassadors who all did a fantastic job.
For many of the Apprentice Ambassadors this was their first experience of public speaking and being involved in a session with school pupils. Despite understandable nerves beforehand every Ambassador did brilliantly and were praised by the teachers and staff who were present in the sessions.
This experience has allowed the Apprentice Ambassadors to develop their own skills and confidence of public speaking which will be invaluable for them as they progress through their own careers.
The next Apprentice Ambassador School visit will be at Harris Academy, Dundee in January, so look out for updates into the New Year about how the programme continues to grow and develop. It is going to be an exciting 2018!
