A great opportunity to showcase our ground level work to the ‘higher-ups’ from national DWP at Dundee’s Job Centre.
Developing the Young Workforce Dundee & Angus have connected lecturer Ian Ritchie from Dundee and Angus College and his students with the local Job Centre for some real-world experience. D&A College was given the brief of creating an artwork which grounded the reception area of the Job Centre in the local community and highlighted Dundee’s changing labour market. The college have so far produced two incredible murals which show the change from factory work to bio-medical technologies and gaming and ship building to hospitality, call centres and renewables, referencing Dundee’s comic book fame and some of it’s local landmarks.
This is a great opportunity for the students as it gives them the experience of working to a brief and within a budget and engaging with a professional client. Working on the murals has also shown them what goes on in Job Centre’s across the country and the support that they can offer to people.
JP Marks, Director General of Universal Credit, who was visiting Dundee, agreed that it is exactly this type of front-line, hands-on work that is needed to help inform and prepare young people, the future workforce, for entering the world of work. Giving them a chance to develop much needed soft skills and to see what different working environments are like.
