Ferry Plumbing
For Shaun Bisset, owner of Ferry Plumbing & Heating Ltd in Dundee, taking on an apprentice was something that he always wanted to do. However as a sole trader it can be challenging to find the right young person to bring into your company.
Instead of the traditional advert in the paper, or online advertising, Shaun decided to take a different approach to his recruitment of a young apprentice, which involved working closely with DYW Dundee and Angus and Dundee & Angus College.
Invest in Me
The DYW team were asked by the Dundee schools skills & enterprise group to deliver a project that would support winter leavers, focusing on the skills and approaches needed to apply for and get a job. The Bank of Scotland partnered with the DYW team to deliver a two stage series of workshops to achieve this.Read more
Business Partnership
Journeycall is an Arbroath based contact centre, providing services within the public transport and smartcard industries. An initial meeting between Claire, DYW employer liaison advisor, and the business highlighted the range of opportunities for young people in this growing industry. Journeycall wanted to communicate this to young people and felt involvement with local schools could achieve this. They wanted to partner with a local school to promote the range of jobs within Journeycall and their parent company ESP Group. It was now down to Claire to connect them with a school partner.Read more
National Butchers Week
To celebrate #NationalButchersWeek DYW Dundee and Angus took the opportunity to interview one of Dundee’s longest established butchers and a local institution, Scott Brothers, specifically co-owner Scott Jarron.
Scott is the third generation in his family to work as a butcher, the original shop was opened in 1935 by his grandfather George Jarron and the family have been involved in the local community ever since.
Women in Science Week
To celebrate Women in Science week Rachel took the opportunity to interview internationally renowned, local scientist/artist, Dr Mhairi Towler. Dr. Mhairi Towler originally studied Biochemistry at Dundee University. She went on to develop further skills and knowledge as a postdoctoral scientist in San Francisco before returning to Dundee.
Back in Dundee she became involved in projects which mixed science, art and community together. Mhairi also began lecturing undergraduate students in Dundee.
Through all of these experiences Mhairi saw that animation and science can work together to engage an audience and illustrate complex scientific processes.Read more
